Stop trong tiếng Anh là gì?
Theo Cambridge Dictionary, stop vừa là danh từ, vừa là động từ.
Stop /stɑːp/ ở dạng động từ có nghĩa là “dừng lại, ngừng lại”. Theo sau động từ stop có thể là “to V” hoặc “V_ing”, tùy vào mục đích của người nói.
Ví dụ:
- She stopped to pick up the letter that she’d dropped. (Cô ấy dừng lại để nhặt lá thư mà cô đã đánh rơi.)
- She stopped playing tennis to go home. (Cô ấy ngừng chơi tennis để về nhà.)
Trong khi đó, stop /stɑp/ dạng danh từ có nghĩa là “sự ngừng lại, sự dừng lại” hoặc “bến đỗ, nhà ga”.
Ví dụ:
- We only had an hour to drive including a 40 min stop for dinner. (Chúng tôi chỉ có 1 giờ để lái xe, bao gồm 40 phút dừng lại để ăn tối.)
- It’s time to put a stop to gender discrimination. (Đã đến lúc dừng việc phân biệt giới tính.)

Cấu trúc stop to V được dùng khi ai đó tạm dừng việc đang làm để chuyển sang làm một công việc khác.

Cấu trúc stop V_ing sử dụng khi ai đó chấm dứt hẳn một hành động nào đó.
